How GST is calculated
Goods and Services Tax is charged as a percentage of the pre-tax price. To add GST, multiply by the rate. To remove GST from a price that already includes it, divide by (1 + rate).
GST amount = net price × rate ÷ 100
Total = net price + GST
Net price from total = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Current GST rates in India
Since 22 September 2025 (GST 2.0), most goods and services fall under 5% or 18%, with 40% for specified luxury and sin goods, and nil for essentials. The old 12% and 28% slabs no longer apply to new invoices. Special rates such as 3% on gold continue. Always confirm the rate for your item in the official CBIC notification.
Worked example
10,000 plus 18% GST: GST is 1,800 and the total is 11,800. Removing 18% from 11,800 gives 10,000 and GST of 1,800.
CGST, SGST and IGST
Within one state, GST splits equally into CGST (Centre) and SGST (State), so 18% is 9% + 9%. Between states the whole amount is IGST.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 18% GST?
Multiply the price by 0.18 to get the GST, or by 1.18 for the total including GST.
How do I remove GST from a price?
Divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.18 for 18% GST. The difference is the GST amount.
Are 12% and 28% GST still valid?
Not for supplies made after 22 September 2025, when GST 2.0 removed those slabs. They are kept in the list only for checking older invoices.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
CGST and SGST split the tax between Centre and State on intra-state sales. IGST applies to inter-state sales and imports.
