Three common percentage questions

Percentage increase vs percentage points
If a rate rises from 4% to 6%, it rose by 2 percentage points, but by 50% in relative terms (2 ÷ 4). News and finance often mix these up.
Reversing a percentage change
A 20% drop followed by a 20% rise does not return to the start: 100 → 80 → 96. To undo a 20% drop you need a 25% rise, because the base changed.

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. 15% of 240 is 0.15 × 240 = 36.
How do I find percentage increase?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
Percentage points are the plain difference between two percentages. Percent change compares them relatively.
Can percentage change exceed 100%?
Yes. If a value more than doubles, the increase is over 100%.
