How income tax slabs work
Tax is progressive: each portion of taxable income is taxed at its own slab rate, not the whole income at the top rate. Taxable income is income minus the standard deduction and any other deductions allowed.
New regime slabs used as the default
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹4,00,000 | Nil |
| ₹4,00,001 – 8,00,000 | 5% |
| ₹8,00,001 – 12,00,000 | 10% |
| ₹12,00,001 – 16,00,000 | 15% |
| ₹16,00,001 – 20,00,000 | 20% |
| ₹20,00,001 – 24,00,000 | 25% |
| Above ₹24,00,000 | 30% |
Budget 2026 left these slabs unchanged for FY 2026-27. The standard deduction is ₹75,000 for salaried taxpayers in the new regime, and a section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000 makes taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 tax-free, with marginal relief just above it. A 4% health and education cess applies on top.
Worked example
Salary ₹15,00,000: taxable income = 15,00,000 − 75,000 = 14,25,000. Slab tax = 0 + 20,000 + 40,000 + 33,750 = 93,750, plus 4% cess = ₹97,500.
