What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC, known as the epoch. It is a compact, time-zone-free way to store moments in databases, logs and APIs.
Seconds vs milliseconds
Most Unix tools use seconds (10 digits today). JavaScript and Java use milliseconds (13 digits). This tool treats numbers below 100 billion as seconds and larger ones as milliseconds.
The year 2038 problem
Systems storing seconds in a signed 32-bit integer overflow on 19 January 2038. Modern 64-bit systems are unaffected.
